DSW empowers young people and communities in low- and middle-income countries by addressing the issue of population dynamics and by improving health as key to sustainable development.

DSW (Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung) is an international development and advocacy organization that raises awareness and conducts advocacy dialogue on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and on the linkages between population dynamics, health, poverty, environmental protection and sustainable development at national and international levels.

Through its Youth-to-Youth Initiative, DSW implements and supports integrated SRHR education activities for young people, including environmental and income-generating components, family planning projects and health initiatives in Africa and Asia. DSW promotes capacity-building of civil society organizations and communities, with a special focus on young people, as well as social and political decision-makers, health providers and relevant stakeholders throughout the world.

DSW was founded in 1991 as a private non-profit foundation by two entrepreneurs from Hannover, Germany. In addition to its head office in Hannover, DSW maintains offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and liaison offices in Berlin and Brussels.

DSW is politically and religiously independent. It has a Board of Directors and an Advisory Board that advises and monitors its operations. DSW is a partner of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It is also a member of numerous national and international networks and cooperates with recognized international organizations, non-governmental organizations, research institutes and experts. In the countries in which it operates, DSW has close relations with local and national government ministries, Members of Parliament and other decision-makers.
