What’s the time frame for taking emergency contraception?
Posted on: October 31, 2019
Emergency contraception, (often called the morning after pill) should be taken as soon as possible after you’ve had unprotected sex to minimize the risk of pregnancy. Efficacy is best if taken within 12-24 hours after unprotected sex.
Why? Because the pill’s efficacy lowers the longer you wait after having unprotected sex.
Here’s the deal:
First 24 hours: 95% effective
Within 49-72 hours: only 58% effective
Conclusion: to be safe, you should take emergency contraception during the first 12-24 hours after you’ve had unprotected sex!
