Introduction
World Contraception Day is a multi-national campaign aiming to raise the awareness for contraception and to improve the level of education regarding reproductive and sexual health.
The campaign is driven by a coalition of non-governmental organisations, including Marie Stopes International (MSI), the Population Council, European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health (ESC), International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (FIGIJ), Centro Latinoamericano Salud y Mujer (CELSAM) and Asian Pacific Council on Contraception (APCOC), and supported by Bayer Schering Pharma.
World Contraception Day is an annual event taking place each year on 26 September.
Activities and events are taking place on and around this date to mark World Contraception Day in countries and regions around the globe.
The theme for 2008 is “Your life, your body, your choice” and is focused on educating young people about contraceptive options to enable them to make informed choices about sex, contraception and parenthood.
At the launch event in London, Kelly Osbourne, successful recording artist and media personality and the global ambassador for 2008, officially launched the day and along with other international speakers talked about the impact unplanned pregnancy has around the world.
This website is also an important part of the campaign and features information and advice on contraception, sexuality and body education as well as useful interactive features.
In addition, a healthcare professional campaign has been launched to ensure doctors, nurses and family planning clinics are fully aware of World Contraception Day. Healthcare professionals will be provided with a number of informative educational materials to provide during consultations, including a Your Contraception guide to share with their clients.
As parents and teachers also play a pivotal role in providing advice and resources to young people, there is information and guidance for them to help them address the topic of sex and contraception with their daughters/sons/students. Updated teaching resources are also available for class lessons on contraception.
We are also making specific information available to university students to help them make informed choices at this important time in their lives.
