Concurrent medications

A number of medications may interfere with the ability of hormonal contraceptive methods to work correctly. The following treatments may reduce the effectiveness of combined oral contraceptives, including rifampicin, certain anticonvulsants and some antibiotics including griseofulvin.

The effectiveness of contraceptives may also be compromised by antiretroviral therapy and condom use in addition to hormonal contraception is recommended in women taking this form of medication.1
