I had this friend named Carol. I met her in Rio de Janeiro when she was 18. At that time, she was hanging out with another friend of mine called Vinicius. He was also 18. It was hot summer night and we were all partying at a club called Bunker in Copacabana. They kissed and drank a lot, and we were all having fun with all of our friends. Late that night, Vinicius asked Carol to sleep at his house because his parents had traveled.

OK Britain, don’t let me down here. World Contraception Day is just weeks away now, and that means the results of the 2010 World Contraception Day survey are just weeks away from being published as well. And I’ve got faith in you, Britain.
Admittedly we didn’t do too brilliantly last year—the whole ‘”forgetting to use contraception because you’re so drunk’” thing sort of tripped us up, and you were so misguided about the withdrawal method that I had to talk about it in a press conference THAT MY MUM WAS WATCHING, so thanks for that—but this year we’re going to ace it.

Lead singer of Karpatenhund, MTV Germany presenter, and safe sex whiz Claire Oelkers put 2 flatmates to the Contraception Pop Quiz test. Boy vs. Girl, Germany vs. UK. Who's the expert on contraception? Do they still know it all after the quiz?

Earlier this year, I went to the streets of São Paulo looking for young people to talk about sex, contraception, condoms, and pregnancy. It was a fun experience. Brazilians like to talk and give their opinions. They like to talk about sex and they talk about it very openly with no shame, no worries. Both men and women. Helloooo! It’s the country of summer, Carnival, and thousands of beaches! Hahaha!

The need to help other motivates some of us more than others, but in general, it’s instinctive. Who isn’t moved by the sight of a person in the street, hungry and cold, or by the possibility of seeing a wounded animal die right in front of us?
But all these manifestations of interest—for the community or any living being in danger or in some form of need —are fleeting. In daily life there are very few people that dedicate time from their lives to help others without any form of compensation, whether it’s economic or to gain public recognition.

I watched a video on YouTube this morning. It was a video of Oprah Winfrey being interviewed by Larry King. To be honest, the only reason I watched it was so that I could get a screengrab of Larry King looking old and stupid, because that’s more or less entirely what I do for a living these days. But then Oprah Winfrey said something that made me stop. She said this:
“You are responsible for your own life.”

Contrary to popular belief, sitting by one of the many Starbucks dotted along Orchard Road here in Singapore is not a sign of bumming your life away—a life that was paid with the blood and sweat of our folks (I can so hear the nagging of naysayers already!). Instead, I see it as people-watching, which was where much inspiration was drawn for this entry.
Here in Singapore, with its multi-racial diversity, you see many different races of all types of color, all in their uniqueness. The way they commune and communicate made me question something that has resonated deep within me, making me appreciate such a rich experience.
Let me elaborate where this train of thought came from.

Lately, now that summer is right in front of us, Coca-Cola has once again become a daily necessity. That refreshing feeling when the bubbly brown liquid makes its way down our throats is a feeling that's familiar to all of us.
Like with all things popular, several myths surround our beloved Coca-Cola: for example, the myth that a steak will completely dissolve if left soaking in Coke for a day, or the myth that mixing Coke with Mentos creates a poisonous liquid.
But have you also heard the rumor that Coca-Cola can be used to protect against pregnancy?
