Relationships

Sexuality is in fact a relationship.

As soon as we start reasoning, we start developing relationships with people around us: parents, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, etc.

And then we start developing our own particular likes. We happen to love tennis, soccer, films, rock, pop, numbers, arts, women, men, both.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

This question follows us from when we are little kids. It’s an obsession grown-ups have with finding out what our lives will be like once we pass through the ‘terrible’ stage of adolescence. Generally, adults are freaked out by the idea of us making huge mistakes and not becoming what they expect us to be: decent and successful professionals who contribute to this distorted society.

However, as we patiently wait for that moment to come, we also undergo a series of changes, in our bodies, our minds, our feelings. And no one seems to be able to face us or speak to us about it in a fearless way.

RESPONSIBILITY

The world RESPONSIBILITY is one of those words that we’ve heard our parents and teachers say millions of times since we were little. Sometimes we believe we understand it since we’ve heard it so many times, but do we know what this word really entails

Today I bothered, for the first time in my life, to look up the exact definition in the dictionary. I found various ones, but the one I liked most was:

RESPONSIBILITY: The existing capacity in any active individual of the right of recognizing and accepting the consequences of a freely made decision.

I also looked up what RESPONSIBLE means: it’s said of a person who puts care and attention into what they do or decide.

According to these definitions, each one of us has RESPONSIBILITY in our bones; it’s innate. But how do we act on it? Who guides us towards RESPONSIBILITY or towards being RESPONSIBLE? And here we have a big dilemma, like what came first, the chicken or the egg.

Sexuality has always been surrounded by myths, which is understandable. If we're afraid of confronting an issue, the easiest thing to do is to invent things to go off course and hide the truth.

But the worst part always comes to those who hear the myth and believe it!

In general I hear myths about the use of condoms, like "it won't feel the same..." Teens in Colombia say that having sex with a condom is like "eating a piece of candy with the wrapper on!" And so, one has to explore and raise awareness with them so that they realize that latex is a wonderful material that in spite of its thinness, is very durable. For me, latex is humanity's best invention!

There are millions of myths-when you want to seduce a girl, you'll say just about anything!

Helping Is Its Own Reward

The need to help other motivates some of us more than others, but in general, it’s instinctive. Who isn’t moved by the sight of a person in the street, hungry and cold, or by the possibility of seeing a wounded animal die right in front of us?

But all these manifestations of interest—for the community or any living being in danger or in some form of need —are fleeting. In daily life there are very few people that dedicate time from their lives to help others without any form of compensation, whether it’s economic or to gain public recognition.

The recent tragedy of the Haitian earthquake caused me to reflect upon how vulnerable we are before the power of nature. We are nothing more than bodies that take up space on the planet, a planet that makes sure to remind us who is in control every time it's tired of receiving blows against it. The tragedy of Haiti is one such open declaration of its impetuosity. And with the global media spotlight on this devastated land, we were all exposed to a reality that we didn't want to see, or accept: the poverty and misery of many countries in the world.

The Past Is Gone, the Present’s a Gift

When you look back on what's happened in our lives from one year to the next, it's inevitable to have nostalgia.

To be able to look back and say that you did an uncommon job, a leadership position that was difficult to maintain, with great responsibilities, of writing publicly that which your conviction dictates, knowing that you could change minds, or even your own.

Almost every time that I've written a post, it's had a pessimistic tone in the background. It may seem like the end is near and that science is 100% certain of it, but if you think about it a little more, you will realize that the posts are situated in the here and now.

It takes a lot out of me to think about the past: the past that has already gone, and what was done or what wasn't done. It doesn't matter because you only have today-now, immediately-to do what you can.
